How to see who changed a product on Shopify
Where Shopify shows product history, what its timeline leaves out, and how to keep a full before-and-after record of every product change.
A price is wrong, a description has changed, or a product went back to draft, and nobody remembers doing it. Shopify keeps some history, but less than most people expect.
Where Shopify shows changes
- Product pages have no change timeline. Unlike orders and customers, a product doesn’t show who edited it or what it looked like before.
- Inventory history (Products → Inventory, then a variant’s quantity) shows stock adjustments and who made them. It covers quantities only.
- Apps’ own logs. Bulk-editing and sync apps often list the jobs they ran, but only their own changes.
None of these keep the old value of a title, price, description, tag or metafield, so even when you find the change you can’t see what it replaced.
Common causes of mystery changes
- Apps that sync prices, inventory or product data from a supplier, ERP or marketplace.
- Scheduled bulk edits or flows that run on a timer.
- CSV imports with “overwrite existing products” ticked.
- Staff or freelancers working on the same products.
If the same change keeps coming back after you fix it, an app or flow is almost always the cause. Check your installed apps and Shopify Flow for anything that writes to products.
Keeping a full history
Revertly records every change to your products as it happens: which field, its value before and after, and when, grouped into one entry per save. You can search by product, open a product’s full timeline, and undo any change or restore the product to how it was before it.
